My name is Mia Dahm, and I’m a student at the University of North Florida majoring in communication with an advertising concentration and a minor in leadership. I serve as a student facilitator for the Hicks Honors College at UNF, and I plan to expand my leadership as I train to be a senior tour guide for my school as well. I’ve spent most of my time outside of the classroom working part-time at an ice cream shop and full-time over the breaks at a signage company in central Florida. I enjoy pretending to be a coffee connoisseur throughout Jacksonville, hosting worship nights for college ministries on top of parking garages, and trying not to get stung by jellyfish at Neptune Beach.
I’m most passionate about the people I have the privilege of influencing. Helping underclassmen smoothly transition into college has equipped me to lead on a larger scale. Making a difference by being relationship and service oriented is needed in the workplace and beyond. A leader cannot have much influence without a foundation of trust, healthy communication, and appropriate vulnerability.
I led a group of roughly 20 students last fall who made history in the Hicks Honors Fundraising program. We were acknowledged for raising the highest amount of money in one semester. I made the academic Dean’s list each semester the last two years at UNF. I have used my knowledge of art, design, and advertising to help complete major projects for Design Communications Ltd. of Orlando. I’m proud to say that I can walk through Harry Potter World at Universal Studios and see some of my work hanging on the scenic storefronts.
Now I’m staying busy as I work to complete my Bachelor’s at North Florida, but I’m always looking for new projects to develop my writing skills and knowledge of advertising particularly in the world of television commercials.
